NAGERCOIL, Tamil Nadu : A Catholic Christian of Kottar Diocese has donated the corpse of his wife for research to a medical college here, November 6.

Lazar, a parishioner of Madathatuvilai, donated the corpse of his wife, Mary Suseela (57), to the Kanyakumari Medical College.

A retired inspector in the transport department, Lazar said that he and his wife had decided to donate their bodies after their death for research purposes. He said his wife developed nervous problems coupled with fits after the delivery of their first child. No one could find out the cause of the malady. Donating her corpse may pave the way for some research findings, he said.

Parish priest of the church, Father Dominic Kadatchadas, said Suseela’s was the first case of body donation in the district, which had been registered earlier by the couple.

He said the parish authorities had created awareness among the parishioners on the benefits of donating human organs. So far 40 members of his parish have registered their eyes for donation, he added.

Father Kadatchadas said the church was organising a propaganda campaign on organ donation as there was a greater need for it.
